Kashmir -Srinagar:

Hizbul Mujahideen’s operational chief Dr Saifullah Mir was killed in a shootout with police and security forces in Rangareth on the outskirts of Srinagar on Sunday afternoon.  One of his associates was also arrested by the police.

Kashmir’s Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar told reporters that the Hezbollah chief commander had died and another militant who was with him had been captured by police during an encounter.

In August 2014, Dr. Saifullah Mir joined the military.  In May this year, he appointed his predecessor, Reaz Naiku, as the new Hezbollah chief, just five days after he was shot dead by Indian troops in an encounter in his village of Baghpora.

The village of Baigpora is five kilometers away from the village of Mir in Mulangpura in Pulwama district of south Kashmir, which has been known as a base of militancy since 2816.

Hizbul Mujahideen is a separatist militant group active in Jammu and Kashmir.
