Indian hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh led India to victory as they beat Spain 3-1 in the shootout after a 2-2 draw in the fourth FIH Hockey Pro League match at the Kalinga Stadium here on Sunday.
Harmanpreet scored India’s first goal in the 11th minute after a shot past the Spain goalkeeper.
After Surender Kumar received a green card, India’s 10-man squad failed to capitalize on a Spain corner in the 14th minute. When Manpreet Singh got a green card in the 21st minute.
The captain of the team scored the second goal of the game through a penalty corner in the 31st minute for the Indian hockey team.
Indian goalkeeper Krishnan Path failed in the 42nd minute, making several off-corner saves but failing to read Mark Miralles’ flick in the left corner as Spain tried to claw their way back into the game and were a goal away. Pere Amat hit on Pathak but the ball fell to the feet of Jugraj Singh, leveling the game in the 54th minute with Spain scoring 2-2.
Harmanpreet secured a goal with a shootout foul penalty stroke by Spanish keeper Mario Garin. Shamsher Singh failed to secure a goal, Raj Kumar Pal and Abhishek managed to cut the ball past Garin. Pathak decided he would miss Gerard Klepps’ effort and India’s Joaquin Menini, Rafael Villalonga and Miralles were successful to give India a 3-1 shoot-out win.
Hockey India on Sunday announced a new policy for Indian players ahead of a busy season. Under this new policy, male and female team members and support staff will be given incentives on an annual basis.
As per the policy, the players of both the Hockey India men’s and women’s teams will receive an annual cash prize of Rs 50,000 with the Indian team registering Rs 25,000 for each of the support staff for each win.
