Guwahati: An explosion at a residence in Churachandpur district on Saturday night killed at least two people, including a toddler, and injured five others, only two days before Manipur’s election.
A mortar appeared to be the source of the explosion in Gangpimual village.

Seven persons were critically injured in the blast, including children, according to a district police official, and were transferred to the district hospital, where Mangminlal, 6, and Langinsang, 22, died of their injuries.

Senior police officers and reinforcements rushed to the scene, and a manhunt was underway to apprehend the perpetrators.

The bomb blast on Saturday night was the first serious act of violence since the Manipur assembly election dates were declared on January 8.

On Monday and Saturday, elections for the 60-seat Manipur assembly will be held in two stages. On March 10, the votes will be counted.
