WASHINGTON: Observing the country’s weak national opposition, spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar stated that he feels that for a healthy democracy, India needs a stronger, as well as constructive, opposition.
“India requires a more powerful, constructive opposition. The (present) opposition is extremely ineffective. In an interview with PTI, Ravi Shankar, the founder of the Art of Living Foundation, said that a lack of leadership in the opposition might make any democracy appear not to be a democracy.
“Democracies require a stronger opposition, one that is conservative and inventive, which India lacks. Of fact, West Bengal has demonstrated that with free and fair elections, no political party can interfere with India’s institutions, and the court is fairly powerful.
However, the lack of a strong central opposition and a strong leader would give the impression that the country is authoritarian, which it is not. We are a massive democracy. Ravi Shankar stated, “People have power.”
The Indian spiritual guru is currently on a two-month tour of the United States, visiting different locations and promoting the message of peace and its importance in a post-Cold War world.

Ravi Shankar met with a group of Congressmen on Tuesday to address mental health.
He gave a speech to the Delaware General Assembly the day before, focusing on mental health issues and promoting peace.
To reach inner calm and mental well-being, the spiritual leader stressed the importance of using one’s own breath.
The inventor of the Art of Living pledged his unwavering support for making Delaware the “Happiest State” by pledging to address mental health concerns in all segments of society, including students, veterans, inmates, physicians, professionals, and others.
Delaware Governor John Carney said, “We are happy to honour and thank Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s humanitarianism, spiritual leadership, and commitment to peace here in the United States and around the world.”
Ravi Shankar’s US tour in 2022 began in Miami, where he spoke to a group of doctors about the benefits of meditation for mental health and overall well-being.
He travelled to Boston, where he spoke at Harvard University about de-stigmatizing mental health.
The Children’s National Hospital and the National Geographic Society conducted a discussion with healthcare practitioners and administrators about prioritising healthcare workforce well-being.
He then spoke with the US surgeon general at George Washington University about the crisis in youth mental health.
On May 6, the spiritual leader started the “I Stand for Peace” campaign in Washington, DC, before arriving in Delaware.
On May 8, he also announced the effort in Philadelphia, promising to make Philadelphia a “Peace City” and announcing the commencement of programmes to improve mental health, resilience, and overall wellbeing indicators in the American population.
More over 2,000 individuals turned out for both activities.
Ravi Shankar, who asserted that peace and nonviolence have always been in India’s DNA, said there is a misperception in the West regarding India’s position on the war in Ukraine, in which many believe New Delhi is supporting an aggressor, which is not the truth.
“First and foremost, we must make it plain to the rest of the world that we support peace. We do not support war. It is a common misperception that we support the war. “Our prime minister has stated numerous times that we support peace,” he added.
He stated that people are angry as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This, according to Ravi Shankar, needs to be addressed, and he is working on it.
