Mumbai has seen the first incidence of a novel Covid-19 variation known as XE, which is a hybrid mutant strain.
According to sources, the XE variant is a cross between two Omicron sub-variants known as BA.1 and BA.2.
In the United Kingdom, the XE version was just discovered.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a warning about the Omicron ‘XE’ variety, which may be more transmissible than any Covid-19 strain hitherto detected.
The new version, according to reports, is 10% more contagious than the BA.2 subvariant, which is already the most contagious.
BA.2, a subvariant of the Omicron strain, is the most prevalent strain of the virus, accounting for 86 percent of all sequenced cases, according to the WHO.
While XE only accounts for a small percentage of infections, its extraordinarily high transmissibility suggests that it may soon become the most prominent strain.
A study summarising the preliminary findings of this potentially new variation of concern was just released by the World Health Organization.
“The XE recombinant (BA.1-BA.2) was initially found in the UK on January 19, with less than 600 sequences reported and confirmed since then,” according to the paper.
“Early estimates show a 10% community growth rate advantage over BA.2, but further research is needed this finding requires further confirmation,” it added.
“WHO continues to closely monitor and analyse the public health risk associated with recombinant variations, as well as other SARS-CoV-2 variants,” the paper continued, “and will give updates when new information becomes available.”
