SYDNEY: Sri Lankan cricketer Doushka Gunathilaka, the national team player arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting Australia, will miss the T20 World Cup in Australia, team sources said on Sunday. Gunathilaka, 31, arrested for sexually assaulting a woman. The Sri Lankan batter, who was accused of sexually assaulting a woman on November 2, was arrested in the early hours of Sunday after investigation and brought to the Sydney City Police Station.
“Daushka Gunathilaka has been arrested on rape charges. The Sri Lankan team has left Australia without her,” a source close to the Sri Lankan team told PTI. The Sri Lankan team was eliminated from the tournament after losing to England on Sunday. The left-handed batsman was dismissed for zero runs against Namibia in the first round match of the ongoing T20 World Cup.
The Lankan team finished fourth in Group 1. This player was dropped in Super 12. New South Wales Police, on its website, also reported the arrest of an unnamed Sri Lankan national. “Following an investigation into the sexual assault of a woman in Sydney’s east last week, detectives from the Sexual Offenses Squad identified a Sri Lankan national as the alleged perpetrator.” Published in reports.
The website details that a 29-year-old woman was sexually assaulted at a residence in Rose Bay earlier this week. “The woman met the man through an online dating application; she allegedly sexually assaulted him on the evening of Wednesday, November 2, 2022.”
A crime scene was taken by specialist police at an address in Rose Bay yesterday. After further enquiries, a 31-year-old man was finally arrested shortly before 1am (Sunday 6 November 2022) from a hotel on Sussex Street in Sydney,” the report added. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is yet to issue an official statement on the matter. (PTI)
