According to the Sputnik news agency, Denis Alipov, the recently appointed Russian envoy, told the Rossiya 24 broadcaster that India is a “global pharmacy” and a top maker of generic medications that are not inferior to the original.
“In several areas, including medicines, the withdrawal of many Western corporations from the Russian market and the niches that have been deserted may actually be occupied by Indian enterprises,” Alipov said, as quoted by Sputnik.
As the West continues to put stronger sanctions on Russia for the invasion of Ukraine, India has been under great pressure to choose a side in the current crisis. India has voted no on UN resolutions condemning Russian aggression and emphasising the need of adhering to international law and the UN Charter.
India agreed to buy oil from Russia at a discount when the US and other western countries placed sanctions on Russian oil and gas businesses, despite rising crude prices. Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, said the US is in contact with Indian leaders at various levels about New Delhi’s choice to buy oil from Russia at a reduced price.
“Of course, we’ve had contact with Indian leaders at various levels, but not through the president,” Psaki said at a press conference.
“However, what we will project and express to any leader across the world is that the rest of the world is looking to see where you stand on this issue, (and) whether you are supporting Russia in any way as they illegally invade Ukraine,” she continued.
As more international companies retreat in the aftermath of the Ukraine crisis, the Russian envoy to India stated on Friday that Indian pharmaceutical companies may replace Western manufacturers exiting the Russian market.
