Sakshi Malik won the gold medal for India at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 in Birmingham on Friday (August 5). She defeated Canada’s Godinez Gonzalez in the final of the women’s 62 kg category. (CWG 2022: India’s first gold medal in Bajrang Punia wrestling, he defeats Canada’s Lachlan McNeil)

Sakshi Malik is an Indian freestyle wrestler. She won a bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in the 58 kg category, becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics. Fellow female wrestler Vinesh Phogat, accompanied by Babita Kumari and Geeta Phogat. Malik previously won a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and a bronze medal at the 2015 Asian Wrestling Championships in Doha.

He was inspired to wrestle by watching his grandfather Badlu Ram, a wrestler himself. Malik’s first success as a professional wrestler in the international arena came at the 2010 Junior World Championships where he won a bronze medal in the 58 kg freestyle event.
