Ajit Pawar, a member of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), has surprised many political leaders with his unexpected appointment as the Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister. After he and eight other NCP MLAs joined, there was a split in the NCP.
Ajit Pawar resigned as Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly before taking this unexpected step. This dealt a blow to the NCP and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, which was formed by the NCP, Congress and Shiv Sena.

Ajit Pawar’s decision to resign as the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly caused controversy and rumours.
However, his swearing-in ceremony cemented his new position in the Eknath Shinde-led administration. Ajit Pawar has been unexpectedly appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He is a member of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
Eight more NCP MLAs, including senior members Chhagan Bhujbal, Dhananjay Munde, and Dilip Walse Patil, were sworn in as ministers during the ceremony that took place at Raj Bhawan.
Pawar’s accession is a major reshuffle in the Maharashtra cabinet. Among them are nine representatives from Shiv Sena, NCP and the opposition BJP and include the Chief Minister and two Deputy Chief Ministers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ajit Pawar praised through a press conference.
He announced that the NCP would collaborate with the BJP in upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, hence justifying his surprising switch.
